Aromatherapy

“The use of fragrances to positively affect a person’s psychology and/or physiology.”

Massage in general is a celebration of the senses. The massage of course naturally rewards the sense of touch. While this is the main attraction, the supporting acts undoubtedly add another element to the experience. I will often play music with a tempo slower than the typical heartbeat in order to encourage the body to enter into parasympathetic state and promote healing. You are surrounded by the beautiful, relaxing and familiar environment you have created within your own home, so why would we leave out a sense as powerful as that of smell?

The link between the olfactory system (sense of smell) and our psychology is well established within the scientific community. Numerous experiments have demonstrated that the simple act of changing the perceivable scent can alter the way we visually, audibly and physically perceive stimulation.

This is of course intuitive to us, have you ever been walking around unfamiliar place, feeling a little uneasy, then encountered a familiar, pleasant aroma that reminded you of home? Instantly the stress you felt before has lessened and you feel safer and more confident in your new surroundings. This is how our bodies interact with our environment in order to warn us of danger and search for the safety of familiarity.
